Restoring Drainage and Installing Stormwater Pit at School Grounds

NUFLOW NORTHWEST SYDNEY
EDUCATION PRECENCT | NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A school was experiencing ongoing drainage problems in the picnic area near Room AR0031, where blocked downpipes and damaged underground lines caused water to back up and pool. These issues posed safety concerns in high-traffic student areas and threatened to worsen with heavy rainfall. The situation was further complicated by the school’s NAPLAN exam schedule, which required all works to be carried out with minimal noise and disruption to classes.

NuFlow was engaged to deliver a lasting solution that would not only clear the immediate blockages but also strengthen the site’s stormwater infrastructure to prevent future failures.

CHALLENGE

  • Blocked downpipe and poor drainage near AR0031.
  • CCTV inspections revealed:
    • Significant root intrusions.
    • Collapsed and bowed pipe sections.
    • Broken downpipe connections.
    • Heavy silt build-up in ag-pipes.
  • Safety risks due to high student foot traffic.
  • Strict noise restrictions during NAPLAN exams.

THE SOLUTION

NuFlow designed and executed a staged approach that combined immediate remediation with long-term
infrastructure reinforcement. Our team leveraged advanced technology and careful project planning to ensure the school remained safe, operational, and disruption-free throughout the works.

  1. Precision Jetting & CCTV Diagnostics
Cleared intrusions and blockages using high-pressure jetting and conducted a full CCTV inspection, identifying hidden failures including root ingress, collapsed lines, and backfalls.
  2. Downpipe Rehabilitation
Replaced compromised downpipes with durable 100mm PVC, restoring flow efficiency and protecting against future leaks and blockages.
  3. Strategic Pit Installation
Planned and installed a new 600mm stormwater pit to increase drainage capacity and direct water safely away from high-use areas.
  4. Safe & Quiet Site Management
Deployed fencing and safe walkways to protect students, while using low-noise methods to comply with exam restrictions and maintain a positive school environment.
  5. Tree Stump & Structural Obstruction Removal
Carefully removed a tree stump embedded in concrete and replaced compromised sections of line, ensuring long-term performance and resilience.

THE RESULTS

NuFlow successfully restored reliable drainage across the school site, eliminating water pooling in the picnic area and surrounding blocks. The new stormwater pit and upgraded downpipes strengthened the site’s infrastructure, providing a long-lasting solution that reduces future maintenance needs.

Despite working under strict exam-related noise restrictions, NuFlow delivered the project safely, on time, and with minimal disruption to staff and students. The school now benefits from a reinforced drainage system that ensures safe, efficient water flow — and the peace of mind that comes with NuFlow’s expert pipe rehabilitation solutions.

Latest news

A concrete-encased stormwater pipe within a slab was failing at Newtown Arcade, causing leaks, flooding and moisture issues in lower tenancies. NuFlow used trenchless Blueline technology to reline and restore structural integrity without demolition, delivering a watertight, long-lasting result with minimal disruption.

Nuflow was engaged to fix persistent flooding and drainage failures behind C Block at a high school, where a compromised 225 mm PVC stormwater line was overwhelmed by silt, failed joints and root intrusions. Using CCTV inspection, high-pressure cleaning and Blueline trenchless relining with Ready Cure technology, NuFlow restored structural integrity and safe stormwater flow with minimal disruption to school operations.

Nuflow carried out essential rehabilitation works on a 17-metre section of 300 mm concrete pipe beneath Birrell Street to Bronte Road, addressing an illegal PVC-to-concrete connection and multiple cracks using trenchless techniques during night shifts to minimise community disruption.
