Main Pool Drain Rehabilitation

NUFLOW NORTHWEST SYDNEY
RIVERSTONE SWIMMING CENTRE | BLACKTOWN CITY COUNCIL

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Nuflow was engaged by Blacktown City Council to rehabilitate the main pool drain at Riverstone Swimming Centre, located on Market Street, Riverstone NSW. The existing 100mm asbestos cement (AC) line servicing the 50m pool showed signs of deterioration and required urgent attention to ensure continued safe operation of the facility. The project involved a confined space reline of approximately 8.13 metres of AC pipe, supported by the installation of a new gate valve and valve riser to improve long-term system performance.

CHALLENGE

  1. Confined space access – The pool’s main drain system required confined space entry, demanding strict safety procedures and specialized equipment for compliance.
  2. Degraded asbestos cement pipe – The 100mm AC drain presented a fragile host pipe that could not be disturbed by traditional excavation methods, making trenchless rehabilitation the only viable solution.
  3. Obstructed line – Initial inspection revealed the drain pipe was heavily blocked with sludge, which had to be cleared before reline works could proceed.
  4. Damaged valve system – The existing valve bolts were rusted and could not be removed, requiring bolt cutting and full valve replacement before rehabilitation could begin.

THE SOLUTION

To address the complex conditions of the site, the Nuflow team delivered a step-by-step rehabilitation and upgrade process:

THE RESULTS

The Riverstone Swimming Centre now has a fully rehabilitated main drain with an 8.13- metre Blueline liner installed in the 100mm AC host pipe. The new gate valve, riser, and key handle provide secure control and ease of maintenance for the pool’s drainage system. By using trenchless technology, Nuflow eliminated the need for disruptive excavation while ensuring the structural reliability of the drain for years to come. Blacktown City Council received a cost-effective, safe, and durable solution that extended the life of critical pool infrastructure with minimal impact on operations.
